October is here, and that means fall colors, pumpkins everywhere, and a well-earned rest over fall break! Take a look at this month’s newsletter for information about lots of activities taking place on campus, in the community, and resources that may be helpful to you.

LGBT History Month

Happy LGBT History Month! As part of this month’s celebrations, we have some great opportunities for you to connect and engage with us.

MESA

As part of Latine Heritage Month (LHE), the Department of Latina/o Studies, MESA and its key collaborators are excited about the Conversation with Sandra Cisneros, author of the beloved book "The House on Mango Street" on October 18 at 7:00pm in the Rackham Graduate School Auditorium. Also, on October 17 at 8:00pm, the School of Music, Theater & Dance presents a workshop and performance on this stunning and timely new opera in the Hill Auditorium.

Fall Housing Fairs

We are pleased to announce two off-campus housing fairs this fall. The fairs are a great opportunity to meet with off-campus housing providers, ask questions, and learn more about the places that could be a good fit for you.

Take Time Before You Sign

This is the time of year when students may begin to think about searching for next year’s housing. This can be an exciting process, but can also be confusing, daunting and tricky to navigate for some students.

Refuse Refuse: Radio

Join the campus sustainability team on Friday, October 11 for a series of 5 workshops across campus, which invite participants to revise our relationship to the disposal of water, knowledge, breath, and family, culminating in a dinner screening of Syrus Marcus Ware's "Antarctica."

LSA x Sustainability Summit

LSA is hosting a DEI x Sustainability Summit on October 16 in the Michigan Union. The event explores the following statement: “Social injustice and environmental injustice are fueled by the same flame: the undervaluing, commodification, and exploitation of all forms of life and natural resources, from the smallest blade of grass to those living in poverty and oppressed people worldwide.”

Empowerment Self Defense

U-M students, faculty and staff are invited to take control of their personal safety by learning physical and verbal strategies to counter violence through our empowerment self-defense workshops.

An Invitation to A Downtown Neighbors Meeting

On Wednesday, October 9, 7 pm, at St. Andrews Church (306 N. Division), the Old Fourth Ward Association is having a meeting to discuss pedestrian, biker and scooter safety on sidewalks. As members of the community, student residents are invited to attend.

Maintaining good behavior during Fall festivities is important to ensure safety and respect for others. Here's a list of Halloween Tips to keep students safe throughout the month of October.

Now that football season is in full swing, we want to remind students about the risks of ticket scam activity. DPSS has identified an increase in a particular type of scam over the past year.
