As part of Latine Heritage Month (LHE), the Department of Latina/o Studies, MESA and its key collaborators are excited about the Conversation with Sandra Cisneros, author of the beloved book "The House on Mango Street" on October 18 at 7:00pm in the Rackham Graduate School Auditorium. Also, on October 17 at 8:00pm, the School of Music, Theater & Dance presents a workshop and performance on this stunning and timely new opera in the Hill Auditorium. SMTD OperaLab and the University Philharmonia Orchestra present a workshop of this stunning and timely new opera, The House on Mango Street. With music by Derek Bermel and a libretto by Sandra Cisneros, the piece is based on Cisneros' beloved novella of the same name. The House on Mango Street follows Esperanza – a Mexican-American girl coming-of-age in Chicago – and the colorful neighborhood that challenges and supports her.

Sandra Cisneros is a poet, novelist, and essayist whose work explores the lives of the working-class. Her beloved novel THE HOUSE ON MANGO STREET is the subject of a new opera. Cisneros joins Ashley Lucas in conversation at Rackham Auditorium. Autographed copies of her books will be given to attendees.
