An Invitation to A Downtown Neighbors Meeting

The Old Fourth Ward Association (OFWA) is a downtown neighborhood association that covers the area bordered on the north by Depot, on the west by Fifth Ave, on the east by Glen, and on the south by Huron. Association members include long-term residents and students. OFWA has been a community partner with Beyond the Diag for many years, and takes part in the annual canvassing activity in August.

The Association’s goals are to maintain and promote the quality of neighborhood life for residents and businesses and to protect historic buildings.

On Wednesday, October 9, 7 pm, at St. Andrews Church (306 N. Division), the Old Fourth Ward Association is having a meeting to discuss pedestrian, biker and scooter safety on sidewalks. As members of the community, student residents are invited to attend. There will also be important discussions regarding local ballot initiatives and campaign financing.

There have also been significant changes to car and bicycle lanes in the city, so we wanted to share the following safety guidance for cyclists, scooters and pedestrians.

  • Yield to pedestrians.
  • If you ride on the sidewalk:
    • ride slowly
    • announce your presence to pedestrians
    • walk your bike on crowded sidewalks
    • yield to pedestrians
    • stop or dismount before entering crosswalks
    • watch for drivers who may not be watching for you!
  • Ride with traffic. If the lane is overly narrow or in an unsafe condition, or if you feel uncomfortable with the passable, consider cycling nearer to the center of the lane.
  • Give yourself space from parked cars to avoid risking a crash if a car door opens in front of you.
  • Always wear a helmet.
  • Be visible. The city requires all cyclists to use headlights and rear reflectors after sunset.
  • Know and follow the rules of the road. Don't swerve in traffic or between parked cars, obey all traffic signals, and ride in the direction of traffic.
