Starting Your Housing Search - NOW?

HOW CAN THIS BE?

Many students begin to sign leases as early as November when the 70 day Early Lease Ordinance is up, however, many students begin preparing and researching during the weeks beforehand. The search can become competitive over the next few weeks, but there is nothing to worry about because the Ann Arbor market is plentiful. Utilize the Beyond the Diag Website and UM’s Off-Campus Housing Listing Service for the resources you need to navigate this process smoothly!

IN PERSON SEARCH

Spare yourself from knocking on doors and making appointments by attending the Beyond the Diag Housing Fairs.  You can meet and talk to different landlords in person, ask questions about the property, and gauge whether or not that property would be a good fit for you. Without a doubt, you will leave with a lot to think about and a bag full of free swag, which could include a drone or an Apple watch!

North Campus: Tuesday, November 3rd, Duderstadt Atrium, 11am - 2pm
Central Campus: Wednesday, November 4th, Michigan Union Rogel Ballroom, 11am - 2pm

ONLINE SEARCH

The listing service offers numerous resources that will assist in your housing search by customizing your search to fit your wants and needs. This includes modifying the amount of bedrooms and bathrooms, price range, lease options, and even what neighborhood you would like to live in. Once you tailor the search, the website will list all of the available houses and apartments that match your preferences, providing you with a simple format to find the perfect home for your next year at UM!

ROOMMATE SELECTION

One of the more challenging parts about the housing search is figuring out with whom you will be spending next year. Choosing your roommates can be a stressful process this early in the school year, especially for first year students who have may not have had the chance to truly get to know many people. My advice to those of you who are contemplating their roommate options is this: trust your instincts and make sure that you will be comfortable with that person  (or people) - being sure that you and this person are on a similar cleanliness level and sleep schedule!

For those having difficulty finding a roommate, I highly recommend using the roommate finder. The program will match you with all of the people who are looking for similar housing options. The format is very similar to the housing service, except in regards to people!

Additionally, the listing website offers many resources and tips on what to do before signing your lease and things to be aware of once you move in. It also includes helpful documents such as a roommate agreement, advice on how to stay safe off-campus, and your legal rights as a tenant.

When tackling the housing search, remember to look for accommodations that fit your needs, acquaint yourself with your rights and expectations as a tenant, and find roommates who you will be well-suited for.

Always remember, you don't have to be in a rush and it is never a bad idea to ask for help!
