Preparing for final exams and the end of the semester

well-being

The weeks between Thanksgiving and Winter break is a stressful time for students across the country. Classes are wrapping up, finals are looming, and students feel tired from a full semester of hard work. However, after finals, a much needed break helps everyone reset between the fall and winter term. As you head into the final stretch of the semester, here are some things to keep in mind to manage stress, study effectively, and finish this semester out strong:

  • Get enough sleep. It may seem impossible between study sessions, group project meetings, and other activities to get the recommended 7-9 hours of sleep each day, but there is no better way to ensure that you have the energy you need to be successful than getting enough sleep every night.
  • Reach out for help. Professors, tutors, and peers are your best friends in classes where you don’t feel confident. At this point in the semester reaching out for help may seem overwhelming, but there are a ton of resources available to help. Take a look at this information UM tutoring resources for more details
  • Take time to relax between study breaks and enjoy others’ company. Another way to make this time a bit less stressful is taking meaningful breaks and make time for a fun and relaxing activity, in the midst of studying.
  • Do your best. As students, we place a lot of importance on making the grade. However, one of the most valuable parts of the college experience is understanding what it looks like to do your best and learn from your mistakes. As you study and embark on exams, put your best foot forward and walk away with your head held high, knowing that whatever the outcome, you did your best.
