In order to promote a safe environment for all the students, faculty, and staff at the University of Michigan, it is important that we all remind ourselves of good safety practices in everyday life and in case of an emergency. Here is a reminder DPSS would like to share with all members within the UM community:

Keep valuables out of sight in vehicles. This simple action could greatly reduce the chance of vandalism to your vehicles. Lock your car and house doors. Unattended vehicles and houses are prone to break-ins. Avoid expensive property losses by simply remembering to lock up.

Secure your bike with a lock that is not able to be cut off. Store your bike inside, not on your porch, if possible. Try to have some type of ID or serial number on the bike and keep a record of it.

Package thefts have recently increased. Arrange for packages to be delivered during a time when you will be home to receive them or to a place that is secured. In addition, when you are shopping online, be cautious of scams (books, leasing, banking, identity, etc ). Never cash a check from someone you met online - it is your responsibility to make sure the check is good before handing it into the bank. Do not give any personal information to people online or over the phone without verifying who you're speaking with.

Don’t leave personal property unattended at parties. Avoid walking by yourself during the nighttime. If you have to, tell a peer about your plans so they can notify DPSS in case something is not right. Adopt the buddy system and make sure you are safe! If you see something suspicious, call the police when you see it. Speak up when you see something.
