Wellness and Belonging at the University of Michigan

The text "be you: you belong here" with an illustration of the 8 dimensions of well-being in the shape of petals of different colors.

Belonging. It’s more than just finding a seat in the lecture hall or a group chat to join; it’s the sense that you are truly seen, heard, and valued for who you are. At Wolverine Wellness, we understand that fostering belonging isn’t a one-size-fits-all endeavor. It’s a dynamic process that involves community, identity, and active participation in the university’s vibrant culture.

What does belonging look like?

Belonging can look different for every student. It may be finding a cultural organization that feels like home or it could be joining a club that matches a passion. It offers the opportunity for spaces where all students—no matter their background—feel empowered to contribute and thrive.

Here are some ways U-M tries to facilitate connection and belonging:

  • Over 1,600 student organizations
  • Cultural and identity-based centers
  • Substance-free events

Barriers to belonging

Despite the opportunities, the journey to belonging can be challenging. Many students encounter hurdles such as:

  • Feeling out of place in large lecture settings or social environments
  • Balancing identities, especially when facing stereotypes or microaggressions
  • Navigating imposter syndrome, a common experience in high-achieving communities like Michigan

Steps toward belonging

Wolverine Wellness is committed to having a campus that elevates well-being. Our “I am a Wolverine and…” campaign directly challenges the notion of imposterism. We also offer wellness coaching where you can talk about anything affecting your well-being, including adjustments to life at U-M, roommate and/or relationship issues, fitting in, and you guessed it – impostor syndrome! We also offer a 2-credit wellness course that touches on loneliness, a problem on all college campuses. Feel free to stop by our office to say hi or relax with a cup of coffee.

Here are a few more tips to help you find your community at Michigan:

  1. Take initiative. Attend events and try out different organizations, even if it means stepping out of your comfort zone.
  2. Seek support. Don’t hesitate to reach out to campus resources.
  3. Be open. Embrace the diversity of perspectives and experiences around you.
  4. Create connections. Sometimes, belonging isn’t about finding the right space—it’s about building it. If something’s missing, consider starting your own initiative.

The bigger picture

Belonging at U-M isn’t just about individual experiences; it’s about fostering a community where everyone feels a sense of purpose and connection. This collective effort—from students, faculty, and staff—is what makes us more than just a campus. It’s what makes it home.

You belong here!
