February Hints and Tips for Conflict Resolution

Graphic with 5 conflict styles depicted. Stick figures in various poses for each.

Are you experiencing conflict in your classroom? With your roommate? In your student org? The Office of Student Conflict Resolution - commonly known as OSCR - can help!

There are five primary styles (or approaches) to conflict:

  1. Competitor - we’re doing it my way. I win, you lose.
  2. Collaborator - how can we both get what we want? I win, you win.
  3. Compromiser - let’s split the difference. I win some and lose some, you win some and lose some.
  4. Avoider - let’s just forget it. I’m fine. I lose, you lose.
  5. Accommodator - let’s just do whatever you want. I lose, you win.

Remember - there isn’t a ‘best’ approach to conflict - each of these styles relates to our personality, perspective and agenda.

OSCR also offers conflict coaching, can facilitate dialogues and restorative justice circles, and many other options tailored to individual needs. Visit the OSCR website or email at [email protected]
