Tips for protecting your rental housing over Spring Break

Closed door

Spring break begins on February 24, 2024. We have put together some simple tips on steps you can take to protect your housing and your personal property while you are away.

  1. Make sure you keep your heat on (at a minimum of 55°F) to prevent the pipes from freezing
  2. Check your lease or ask your landlord what temperature your thermostat should be set to in order to avoid freezing pipes;
  3. Notify your landlord in writing of the dates you will be out of town;
  4. Make sure all doors and windows have been closed and secured;
  5. Unplug and disconnect all power cords and appliances;
  6. If any of your indoor faucets are located on exterior walls that aren't adequately insulated, set your faucets to a slow drip if temperatures may dip below freezing;
  7. Make sure your smoke and fire detection devices are functioning properly: The Ann Arbor Housing Code prohibits a landlord from leasing a unit which is not equipped with smoke or fire detection devices or with an automatic fire alarm system.  [See, Ann Arbor Housing Code Section 8:527]. Contact your landlord before you leave to make sure the smoke and fire detection devices are functioning properly;
  8. Additionally, do not keep valuable property in plain view: Keep your shades and blinds closed to prevent those passing by from looking into your home.  Do not keep valuable property by the window or in the line of sight from the outside!
