Important reminder - open containers

Open container ordinance details

As we continue into the fall, the Community Concerns Response Program would like to remind all members of our community about the laws, ordinances, and guidelines within Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan that relate to open containers of alcohol.

  • It is illegal to be on public property with open containers of alcohol. Public property includes sidewalks, alley ways, streets, and public buildings. An open container means a broken seal.
  • It is a violation of university policy for anyone to consume or possess alcohol on the Diag or inside any university athletic facility, including Michigan Stadium.
  • If in an established social district area, adhere to guidelines within the common area.
  • A first violation is considered a civil infraction, and can result in a fine of up to $1,000
  • Subsequent violations are considered misdemeanor offenses, and may result in escalating fines and public service
