Ann Arbor City Council recently appointed James Baird Police Chief of the Ann Arbor Police Department (AAPD) on the night of February 16th, 2016. Baird has served as Interim Police Chief since July of 2015, but has been with AAPD since 1993. He was selected for the job after the Ann Arbor City Council completed its national search. Interim City Administrator, Tom Crawford, noted the, “quality of his leadership and management experiences," as Baird’s best attributes, and went on to say that Baird would be a leading candidate for the top job in many police departments around the country.
Beyond the Diag would like to formally congratulate Chief James Baird on behalf of the University of Michigan Student Body! Chief Baird participated in Beyond the Diag's fall 2015 canvassing event as we welcomed UM students to their new homes! We are looking forward to continuing our close working relationship with AAPD and believe that, under Chief Baird’s leadership, we can continue to improve Off-Campus Safety, as well as the relationship between Michigan Students and our local law enforcement.
