Spring Cleaning for Your Mental Health

As the school year is wrapping up, getting some early Spring Cleaning in is not only useful for when you move out in a couple of weeks, but is also a great way to de-stress! When sitting at the library all day it can be frustrating to come home to a mess. Cleaning is a great way to move around and be able to see visible progress after a long day. It can be super helpful for your mental health, when you don’t have the energy to go to the gym, but need some activity.

Trying to study in a cluttered or disorganized space can make it difficult for many people to focus. By taking the time to organize your space before studying, you can not only prepare to focus, but also use it to declutter your mind. Research shows that being in an disorganized space is one of the top five reasons for stress. Here are some new ways to reorganize your space that will take less than 5 minutes!

  1. Clean out your phone! Over the school year so many students accumulate data on their phones that they will never use again. Try deleting some of those apps you used one time, old group project messages, and useless screen shots and photos. Not only will your phone work more quickly, but you won’t get stressed every time you are looking for something on it!
  2. Take a moment to empty out your backpack and throw it in the wash! Thinking about all the places you set your backpack during the year, it is easy to see why this is necessary.  During finals it is so easy to keep throwing different things in it. By cleaning it out ahead of time you are way less likely to waste time searching for that paper you are 99% sure you stuck in your backpack.
  3. Take a look at your desktop and take a moment to reorganize all those files that you probably won’t need after this semester. It is always great to keep things for safe-keeping, but try making folders to keep track of what you need to study, and what you probably won’t use again!

While these tips may help you get ahead on Spring Cleaning and reduce stress, there are many university resources if you are feeling overwhelmed.
