Find Your Place and Your People

If you didn’t spot your ideal club or committee at Festifall, not to worry. There are plenty of University resources to help all students discover their niches outside the classroom.

A great place to start looking for a new club is through Maize Pages, an online resource for club life at Michigan used by over 1,000 student organizations. The site contains a variety of student groups, ranging from service-based to sports and cooking to consulting. Most organizations on Maize Pages list their contact information, so don’t hesitate to reach out to a club of interest.

Another convenient resource is the Center for Campus Involvement, which contains a list of upcoming events around campus throughout the year, like UMix , UM Poetry Slam and local happenings in Ann Arbor. If you are searching for leadership positions or more student organizations to join, this tool could be especially beneficial.

Similar to the Center for Campus Involvement, the Happening @ Michigan Calendar is a handy resource for navigating future functions on campus. This resource allows students to narrow down their search based on location, event type and interest.

With all the round-the-clock events transpiring on campus, it can be easy to neglect staying active. Whether you are a fitness junkie or just looking to get in a workout and engage with the Michigan community, take a look at Recreational Sports. Recreational Sports offers programs for workout classes like Group-X and a variety of  workout spaces across campus. The department also offers intramural sports teams, which are geared at all skill levels and can help students meet new people while having fun and getting exercise.

If you still haven’t found an organization that wows you, don’t fret. Students have the power to start their own organizations through the Center for Campus Involvement. While forming your own club may sound perfect, before you decide to do so, be sure to review all the student organizations available. Chances are there is at least one that will suit your passions and goals.

One of the best resources for finding a new club is by simply asking around! Connect with your friends, classmates, and acquaintances to determine what they are involved in. Step out of your comfort zone and attend events that you normally wouldn’t. With an abundance of resources and a little initiative, you’ll be on the right track toward discovering your new favorite extracurricular, and hopefully meeting some new peers!
