Use a U-Lock!

Now that the school year is here, many students find it easier to navigate campus by bike. However, caution does need to be taken with bike safety, especially when it comes to bike theft. We hear stories every year about people who have not properly secured their bikes, and have then had it stolen. With bike theft on the rise, DPSS has provided a lot of very useful information on tips to prevent bike theft and how to lock your bike using a U-Lock.

To reduce the risk of becoming a victim of bike theft, please consider the following safety precautions:

  1. Register your bike with DPSS. Students and staff who register their bike have the ability to get a free U-Lock!
  2. Use a U-Lock over regular cable locks - cable locks are much easier to cut through using bolt cutters or other tools.
  3. Properly secure your bike onto the bike rack through your frame and at least one of the bike wheels.

To register your bike, follow the simple steps below:

  1. Go to: https://www.police.umich.edu/register_property.php
  2. Next select “Enter new item” on the top left menu
  3. Enter information about your bike such as make, model, color, etc.
  4. Once you’re done you should receive an email to your umich address confirming that your information has been entered.
  5. Two stickers should be mailed to you to mark your property.

You can then visit the DPSS front desk at 1239 Kipke Dr (near Michigan Stadium) Monday-Friday, 8am-4pm, to receive your new U-Lock!
