Setting Yourself up for Success in the Winter Semester!

1. Schedule time in your day to rest. Whether it be a half hour in between classes for lunch, an extra few minutes in the morning to meditate, or an afternoon workout class, scheduling time in your day to rest will make you more productive when it is time to do work.

2. Get into an exercise routine! Not only will it help you get ready for the beach during spring break, establishing an exercise routine can help you beat the winter blues as well as improve your immune system. Try out Group X classes offered at the IMSB, CCRB and NCRB. Or, if you’re looking to get off campus, many fitness studios offer student discounts, or first class free!

3. Buy a planner (and use it!). The beginning of the semester can be a hectic time. Each class seems to have piles of due dates and assignments; it’s easy to get overwhelmed! Stay ahead of your work by writing out your schedule and assignments in your planner. Your future self with thank you.

4. Get help before you need it! Many schools offer free tutoring sessions, as well as professors’ and GSIs’ office hours. It may seem like a hassle, but being proactive will prevent any night-before-the-exam panic.

5. *Staying* healthy is easier than *getting* healthy. Simple habits like eating a balanced diet, getting out in the sunshine (when the sun decides to show up in Ann Arbor), and getting at least 8 hours of sleep will contribute to a strong immune system! You can also incorporate foods such as echinacea (try echinacea tea), turmeric (golden milk latte, anyone?) and garlic into your diet to boost your immune system! See the golden milk latte recipe below!

  • Combine 1.5 cups non-dairy milk, ¾ tsp turmeric, ¼ tsp cinnamon, ½ tablespoon coconut oil, a dash of ground ginger and a dash of black pepper into a saucepan over medium heat.

  • The black pepper helps activate the wonderful effects of turmeric.

  • Whisk the mixture as it heats, adding your sweetener of choice to taste (honey, sugar or maple syrup are all great options).

  • Pour into your favorite mug and enjoy!

Note: Turmeric will stain your clothes yellow so be careful!
