Office of Student Conflict Resolution - "I" statements

The Office of Student Conflict Resolution (OSCR) is providing some help tips on how to successfully navigate conflicts with others. This month’s topic is "I” statements.

“I” statements can be incredibly helpful when navigating conflicts with friends and roommates. Focus on objective observations about what is upsetting you eg. "I noted there were dishes in the sink". Avoid putting blame on other people. Use "I” statements to share how you are feeling and what your needs are in the situation. eg. "I feel overwhelmed when our shared space is cluttered" and “I would appreciate it if we could create a cleaning schedule or find a way to hold each other accountable for our dishes”. “I” statements also help you to express your feelings, without making assumptions about someone else’s perspectives or feelings on a situation. The next time you’re in a situation with a friend or roommate and you see something that you’re not happy about, try beginning with an “I” statement - see how they react, and if it leads to a more fruitful and constructive conversation!
