Insure Your "Swag"

Living off-campus can be exciting, but also presents its own set of challenges. One challenge is that the University is not responsible should your belongings be stolen or lost. The same is true if someone were to be injured in your off-campus living space. In addition, depending on your lease, your landlord may not be responsible for those damages either, and all the liability may fall on you or your roommates. Thankfully, that’s why there is renter’s insurance. Renter’s insurance, much like homeowner’s insurance, can cover the cost of lost or stolen property, and may cover injuries as well.

However, what specifically is covered can vary from plan to plan so make sure you are clear on what will be covered and how much it will cost you before agreeing on an insurance plan. Where can you find local agencies that provide renter’s insurance? Beyond the Diag has a helpful handout for you. Beyond the Diag does not endorse the companies listed, this handout exists simply to help you in your search. Be proactive and find renter’s insurance that works for you before you need it, it may save you big time.
