How To: Beat The Cold

For those of us from warm climates, the first time the temperature dips below 30 degrees can be quite shocking. Even if you come from Michigan, the winter you experience when having to walk around campus might be very different in comparison to the days when you could run from the car to the building with just a hoodie. Here are some ways to stay warm as the temperature continues to drop:

Get a Good Coat

Trying to find the right coat can be tricky and different people want different qualities. When shopping for a coat some things to consider are amount of insulation, waterproof status, and length. Getting a down coat will provide a lot of insulation. Having a longer coat can keep your legs warmer and prevent the wind from reaching you. If you’re looking to purchase a coat, North Face and Nautica are popular brands here on campus. You can also check out Nordstrom Rack or Macy's to get the same brands at cheaper prices. For a great deal on used winter gear, visit Salvation Army at 1621 S. State Street.

Layer Your Clothes

Having a good coat will definitely help you stay warm but layering your clothes can also help because sometimes, a pair of jeans is just not enough. You might also be thankful when you can take off that extra jacket once you get to your classroom that feels like it’s 80 degrees. Ultimately, dress for the occasion. If you know you’ll be outside for a while, it might be more comfortable to have an extra shirt or sweater on or a pair of long johns (or leggings) beneath your jeans.

Cover Vulnerable Extremities

While it might seem like a hassle to carry around your gloves, scarf, and hat, smaller extremities like ears, nose, fingers, and toes are the most likely to get frostbite. Wool socks in addition to waterproof shoes can help protect your toes. If you feel ambivalent about wearing gloves because you’re concerned about sending that last text or email you can look into purchasing gloves with touchscreen finger tips or convertible flip-top mittens!

Always be aware of your body and check for symptoms of frostbite if you are exposed to cold temperatures for prolonged periods of time. If you do end up feeling cruddy, check out these tips for staying healthy!
