Home Safety during Winter Break

Unfortunately, the holidays are a time when student properties are targeted for break-ins, as criminals anticipate that properties may be unoccupied during the break and may still contain electronics and other valuables. To reduce the risk of being a victim of this crime, please follow a few simple steps before you leave town - and make sure your housemates do the same:

  • Lock up - make sure all doors and windows are locked and secured, and interior doors and blinds are closed
  • Take away - take all valuables with you
  • Out of Sight - if you are planning to leave valuables, make a note of serial numbers and take photos of your items before you leave. Make sure all valuables are left out of sight
  • Lights, Camera - put lights on a timer, and invest in a security or doorbell camera system
  • Call - if you see something suspicious at your house or another property, please call 9-1-1 immediately.
