February 23-27, 2015 is Eating Disorder Awareness Week (EDAW) at the University of Michigan. Eating disorders—such as anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder—are serious mental and physical illnesses that can have life-threatening consequences. The goal of EDAW is to provide education and outreach opportunities on campus to increase awareness about eating disorders and body image issues for effective recognition, early intervention, and direction to care for those who are in need.

College students are particularly at-risk for developing eating disorders because college is a time when life, family, and social stressors are particularly high and the pressure to fit physical ideals increases. It’s more important than ever to raise awareness about the dangers of these illnesses on campus, and the resources available to students affected.

A number of campus resources, including University Health Service (UHS), Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), and the Body-Peace Corps facilitate programs to decrease eating and body image concerns on campus and provide support and resources for students who are struggling with an eating disorder.
