DPSS Fire Safety and Emergency Preparedness

In order to promote a safe environment for all the students, faculty and staff at the University of Michigan it is important that we all remind ourselves of the university's guidelines surrounding actions to take in case of an emergency. COVID circumstances have caused some changes to building access so it is crucial that people are proactive about knowing the emergency protocols in the buildings they work and/or study within. Here are some tips for specific types of emergencies.

Fire Safety

It is important to familiarize yourself with where the fire alarms, fire extinguishers, and emergency exits are in case there is a fire. If you see smoke or fire trigger the fire alarm system by pulling on the handle in order to warn others. Evacuate the building immediately but remember do not use elevators, use stairs instead and look out for anyone with disabilities that may need assistance in evacuating to safety. Once everyone is safely evacuated contact the Division of Public Safety and Security regardless of magnitude and they can notify the fire department if necessary.

Tornado

If there is a tornado in the area move to the lowest space of the building you are in that has no windows. Examples include internal hallways, basements, or restrooms. Crouch low to the ground, under heavy sturdy objects if possible and put your hands over the back of your head. Do not move from this spot until you are sure that the tornado has passed and you get the all clear from the local media.

Active Attacker

If possible, the first thing you should do is run away from the threat as quickly as possible and warn others to do the same. This may require leaving belongings behind but your safety is first priority in this situation. If you cannot leave however the second step is to hide where you can lock doors and create a barrier to slow down the active threat. Make sure if you are hiding to silence your phone and remain quiet. As an absolute last resort if your life is in danger, you may attempt to fight the attacker by disrupting or incapacitating them. You can do this by distracting them with throwing objects or yelling loudly. Be aggressive and use anything in your environment possible as a weapon. If possible it is best to disarm the attacker of his weapons and remember there is strength in numbers, so solicit as much help as you can.

COVID-19

To stay up to date on fall semester plans and the universities response surrounding COVID-19, please check out the Maize and Blueprint website to know how we can all reduce the spread of the virus. Vaccination is required for all students, faculty and staff with limited exemptions; vaccinations are proven to prevent hospitalizations and severe illness, and allow us to return to a more normal school environment going forward. Do your part to stop the spread and protect others while also protecting yourself!

Lastly, one of the most important things you can do to stay safe is make sure you update your contact information in order to receive up to date UM Emergency Alerts (https://alerts.umich.edu) so you can react promptly. Please check out the DPSS website (https://www.dpss.umich.edu) for more valuable information on how you can do your part to ensure safety for yourself and your fellow Wolverines!
