The Central Campus Recreational Building (CCRB) is closing on December 9 at 9pm, and in January 2023, the demolition of the current building and construction of the new CCRB will commence. The new facility is expected to be ready Fall 2025 and will be built on the same site as the current CCRB. In this new 200,000-square-foot recreational facility, there will be more offerings beyond what was originally found at the current CCRB for students and members, including climbing and bouldering walls, a turf court, cycling studio, and more.

During the time when the new construction takes place, U-M students and Recreational Sports members will still have access to the Intramural Sports Building (IMSB) and the North Campus Recreational Building (NCRB). Additionally, just next to where the construction will take place is an enclosed, fabric-structured temporary facility on Palmer Field.

To make sure students and members can keep up with their fitness and well-being goals the domed temporary facility is on track to open in January 2023. It will feature showers and restrooms, temporary lockers, over 50 pieces of cardio equipment, over 50 pieces of strength equipment, stretching area, group fitness room, a running/walking track and air conditioning. The domed facility has about 23,000 square feet of recreational space.

Additional recreational opportunities will still be available at other recreational sports facilities. The swimming pool at the NCRB is available during regular hours of operation and you can enjoy drop-in swimming at Canham Natatorium Monday – Friday from 11am – 1pm  during the fall and winter semesters. Gymnasium courts are available at the NCRB and the IMSB. Squash courts are available at the NCRB while racquetball courts are available at the NCRB and the IMSB.

The domed temporary facility will take up about half of the grass space on Palmer Field; the remaining space will still be available for outdoor activities. Updates and additional information can be found on the Recreational Sports website.
