Expect Respect and Navigating Transitions

The University of Michigan’s Expect Respect program exists to promote a campus community rooted in care, inclusion, and accountability. That work becomes especially important during periods of transition, moments that can feel exciting, uncertain, and at times overwhelming.

As the academic year comes to a close, many students are navigating significant changes. For off-campus students, this can look like signing a new lease, adjusting to new roommates, balancing work and classes, or preparing for what comes after graduation.

These transitions often come with new responsibilities and questions about stability. You are not expected to have everything figured out, even if it feels like you should.

Transitions & Support

Even off campus, you are not navigating these changes alone. Academic uncertainty, housing decisions, and personal stress are all common during this time, and there are resources in place to support you through each of them.

Your school or college advising office can help you think through course plans and long-term goals.

Beyond the Diag Off-Campus Housing resource offers support with listings, lease education, and understanding tenant rights.

CAPS provide space to process stress, uncertainty, or anything else you may be navigating.

Campus Climate Support and ECRT work together to support students who have experienced discrimination or harassment based on their identity, providing a space for care, connection, and support.

Reaching out early can make these transitions feel more manageable and less isolating.

Transitions & Routine

When things feel like they’re shifting, small points of consistency can sometimes help.

Some ways to stay grounded during transitions include:

  • Keeping a regular sleep schedule
  • Maintaining a weekly check-in with friends or family
  • Setting aside dedicated time for meals or movement
  • Creating structure in your day, even outside of class

These habits provide stability and can help reduce stress, even when other parts of your life feel uncertain.

Transitions & Expectations

You cannot control everything about what comes next. Trying to plan every outcome can create unnecessary pressure. Instead, focus on what is within your control, your effort, your decisions, and how you take care of yourself. Letting go of rigid expectations allows space for growth, flexibility, and new opportunities.

Moving Forward

Transitions can feel uncertain, but they also create space for growth and new possibilities.

Support, community, and care remain available to you, both on and off campus.

Expect Respect remains committed to fostering a culture of care, kindness, and inclusion. As you move through this season of change, remember that you are supported, you are capable, and you are not alone.
