New Year, New Start

January can often bring with it ambitious goals that can sometimes be hard to maintain - like Dry January, or resolutions around exercising more, eating more healthily, or even cutting back on screen time.

Instead of focusing on lofty goals that might become unsustainable, use this time to think about what’s really important to you. The new year and a fresh semester are a great time to check in on your relationship to topics like alcohol, cannabis, and other drugs. It’s also an excellent opportunity to connect with a friend and talk about how you can support each other in the year ahead. These conversations don’t have to be heavy or awkward! Here are a few tips to help you get started:

  • Be curious. What are your top priorities for the winter semester? What would help you feel more confident navigating the social scene or making decisions that you feel good about when it comes to substance use?
  • Keep it real. Resolutions often fail when they’re all-or-nothing, and the same applies to well-being goals. Think about what’s realistic for you. What do you like about drinking (or using other drugs)? What don’t you like about it? What’s your plan for making choices you feel good about?
  • Consider the continuum of experiences. Your feelings and values around substance use matter. So do those of your friends. There are thousands of students on campus who choose not to drink, so try connecting in ways that may not involve alcohol, cannabis, and other drugs.
  • Know the facts. Misinformation is common, so be a trusted source of accurate facts. Brush up on helpful topics, such as how long it takes for someone to sober up or how to ask for help.
  • Help a friend. There are many resources on campus that are here to support you or a friend. The Stay in the Blue campaign and accompanying app can help you track drinks. Cannabis Conversations and the Clear30 app can help you check in on your relationship with cannabis. Groups like the Collegiate Recovery Program or even the Addiction Medicine Clinic can also help if you need a little extra support.

Remember - the goal isn’t perfection or a complete overhaul. It’s about starting the process to think about your goals and how you can make choices that align with those goals.
