Theft Prevention and Ticket Scams

Guidance for avoiding ticket scams

The university’s Division of Public Safety & Security (DPSS) wants to remind students of the importance of locking your doors and windows when leaving your property. Most thefts and break-ins occur via an unlocked door or window, as this is an easy way for thieves to gain access to your belongings. This advice applies to both residential properties and vehicles, so when leaving your house or your car, make sure all the doors and windows are securely closed and locked. If you think a roommate may be in the house but you’re not sure, take an extra minute to double-check. It may save you a lot of time and money by reducing the risk of a break-in.

If you have a door or window in your residence that won’t close or lock properly, please make sure you report this to your landlord immediately, so that they can address the issue.

Scam Awareness

Please be aware that scammers are continuing to target popular U-M athletics events (including football and basketball games) to target MCard users with ticketing scams. The scammer will often try to impersonate a U-M student as part of the scam. You should always use a student’s umich.edu email address to confirm their student status, and if you are ever unsure about a seller’s identity, be cautious - don’t share personal information or payment details. If you believe that you have been the victim of a scam, please contact DPSS immediately - dpss.umich.edu / 734-763-1131.
