The Ann Arbor community is committed to recycling and we want to give you every opportunity to be as well! Each day, the average U.S. resident produces 4.4 pounds of waste- much of which ends up in the landfill but could potentially be recycled, reused, or composted.
Moving off-campus, and in many cases to a new city or state entirely, can be a huge adjustment with many new things to learn. Since recycling guidelines vary from city to city, we want to make sure you know how it all works in Ann Arbor.
Here are some common questions and answers about off-campus recycling:
- Help! What items can (and can’t) go into the curbside recycling cart? Check out our Curbside Guide or A-Z recycling guide for a list of items and where they can go. Be the “green leader” in your house by printing off a guideline flyer and hanging it on the fridge!
- When is my day of service? This map will help you figure out when your service day is. All carts need to be at the curb by 7am (or the night before) on your service day. Lids must be closed and all items must be inside the cart. No cardboard or items can be on the ground.
- I just moved in but my residence doesn’t have a recycling cart. How do I get one? Every residence in Ann Arbor is required to have access to recycling- and it’s all free! If you moved in and you don’t have a recycling cart contact Recycle Ann Arbor at [email protected] or 734.662.6288 to request one.
- How do I dispose of “bulky-items” such as a couch or mattress? Recycle Ann Arbor’s Drop-Off Station and Jackson Rd. Facility provide options to dispose of general recyclables, but also “bulky items” such as electronics, mattresses, tires, and yard waste. Check out the hyperlinks for location details and information about pick-up services too!
- I’m looking for an affordable couch or want to donate my “good” condition one. Where do I go? Recycle Ann Arbor’s ReUse Center accepts donations of reusable furniture, housewares, and building materials that the public can then purchase at affordable prices.
