Staying Safe on Football Saturdays

One of the most exciting parts of fall semester is  attending a football game at The Big House! As part of preparing your game day plan, we want to make sure you have a safe and fun experience, and avoid decisions that could put you or others at risk. One of the most significant contributors to riskier decision-making is the over-consumption of alcohol and/or other drugs. A few tips for those who choose to consume alcohol:

  1. Eat food and alternate alcoholic drinks with water or other non-alcoholic drinks.
  2. Keep track of how much you have consumed using the Stay in the Blue app
  3. Never drink and drive! Keep an eye out for your friends and make alternative plans for getting home if you plan to consume alcohol.
  4. Always know what is in your cup! One standard drink is about 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine or 1.5 ounces of liquor (a shot). Not only is it important to know how much you are drinking, but it is super important to know what you are drinking! Always watch the person making your drink (unless it comes prepackaged such as in a can or bottle) and never leave a drink unattended.
  5. Mixing alcohol with drugs can be dangerous, and in some cases can cause serious complications. Always check labels on prescription and over-the-counter medications before consuming alcohol.

Whether or not you choose to drink is a personal decision and one that should be respected by everyone in the party. If you are hosting a party, make sure to include non-alcoholic options and food.

Finally, remember to dress appropriately for the weather and if applicable wear sunscreen! We hope you have fun at the games, and remember to always be respectful of all fans at the game - yes, including the visiting fans, and no matter the result! Go Blue!
