Thanksgiving - a Time to be Grateful AND Mindful

Thanksgiving is right around the corner and for many, this is a time of gratitude and time spent with family around a large meal! It is important that you take time to be present with your loved ones and enjoy the time you have with them, but it is also important to keep in mind that Thanksgiving can be a painful holiday for individuals who might not be able to celebrate with family or due to the historical implications it has towards indigenous and native communities.

Thanksgiving can be a reminder that colonization obliterated entire communities and their traditions. These feelings can bring up painful emotions instead of feelings of gratitude.

Expect Respect encourages you all to be mindful and thoughtful when celebrating Thanksgiving. It is important to be conscious of the implications of this holiday to differing communities. In addition, be mindful that some people do not have family or loved ones to spend this holiday with. As student leaders we can use this time as an opportunity to give back to our communities or support others in any way possible. This Thanksgiving, The Dean of Students Office encourages you to take time to recognize the privileges you may have, while also taking time to enjoy your loved ones!
