Response to The One petition (full detail)

We recognize that the delay in occupancy at The One has been an extremely difficult, unsettling, and ongoing situation for students at the beginning of this semester. The Dean of Students Office continues to be available to support and assist students who are experiencing difficulties related to their off-campus housing.

Since notification of the occupancy delays at The One, the DOS Office has been supporting individual students for their particular and unique concerns, and has been in regular communication with The One to advocate for student needs and address the significant issues and concerns caused by this delay in occupancy.

Students who need support can connect with the Dean of Students Office by calling (734) 764-7420 during normal business hours (Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) or emailing [email protected].

DOS has worked with approximately 45 individual students regarding specific requests. Students who have contacted the Dean of Students Office have received information, support, and resources including:

  • Information for on- and off-campus community food resources.
  • Emergency financial assistance for some related expenses.
  • Transportation options in and around Ann Arbor, including AAATA.
  • Support with contacting faculty and instructors to explore class participation options.
  • Off-campus housing options, if interested in pursuing other off-campus housing.
  • U-M Housing information for individuals interested in applying to live on campus.

DOS has also shared student concerns with The One, which has prompted The One to:

  • Add an FAQ to the landing page on their website.
  • Update the FAQ with a step-by-step guide on accessing Community Rewards.
  • Add bus times and a live bus tracker to the website.
  • Increase shuttle frequency and add extra routes.

Regarding the specific requests outlined in the petition delivered to the Dean of Students Office on Friday September 10 and in the resolution passed by the LSA Student Government on September 15, 2021:

  1. The off-campus housing listing service shows no availability at The One currently, ensuring students are not able to enter into a new lease with The One if they identify the property through the housing listing service. In addition, the Dean of Students Office has placed a statement on the Beyond the Diag website regarding The One, including the support available to students who have been displaced in recent weeks.

  2. The One has provided a daily stipend, through a Community Rewards account, to students who are currently staying in hotels or with family and friends. Students should check the FAQ on The One’s website for additional information about accessing the Community Rewards. Students can work with the Dean of Students Office to address any specific barriers they are experiencing accessing those funds. The One has told the Dean of Students Office that the Community Rewards can be converted to a Visa card, which could be used for purchase of Blue Bucks or meals on campus if that would be a more convenient option for students.

If students are experiencing other financial hardships, they can work with the Dean of Students Office to determine if emergency funds are available.

        3. Individual faculty members are responsible for determining options for course modality and content delivery. Students should speak with their faculty member(s) if they are experiencing difficulty attending classes or engaging in a course or coursework, to determine options for that class specifically.

The Dean of Students Office is able to provide notification to a student’s specific faculty member(s) of the student’s involvement in this difficult circumstance and/or about transportation delays causing them to be late or to miss class, upon request.

The Dean of Students Office is also working on compiling an accurate list of students affected by this delay in occupancy, to notify the schools/colleges about their affected students.

       4. A number of free parking options are available for students who would like to drive to campus, instead of using the shuttles provided by The One. These options include:

            a. Free Parking (no permit needed) in lot SC34 (State Street Park & Ride)

                  - Free to ride the Park & Ride with a student MCard (AAATA service to Central Campus; Route 62)

             b. Free parking (no permit needed) in lot NC37 (Green Road Park & Ride)

                 - Students can get to North Campus in a few minutes by U-M Transit buses.

             c. Junior, senior, and graduate students are eligible for Student Orange permits. More information can be found on the Logistics, Transportation, and Parking website.

                 - The cost for a student annual permit is $70 (valid through June 30, 2022) and the cost pro-rates down on the 1st and 15th of the month.

                 - As of now, there is ample Orange capacity in SC7 (large Orange lot by the Stadium). U-M Transit buses service this lot to Central Campus with connecting service to Medical and North Campus.

Student Legal Services is currently working with approximately 30 students to address legal and contractual issues raised by this occupancy delay. Any student affected by the delay in occupancy can request assistance from Student Legal Services.
