Ready, Set, Study Abroad

  1. Figure out when and for how long you want to go, as well as how long you can go. Knowing Michigan students who do things like triple major in Engineering, Business, and English with a few minors here and there, make sure that studying abroad won’t make your senior year multiply. Simply make an appointment with your academic advisor, and talk about what requirements for your major and/or minor can be filled while abroad. Knowing this can help you to decide whether you go for a full year, one semester, or just a month-long summer program.

  2. Are you going to go through a Michigan program? Michigan offers a large array of programs which can all be found on Mcompass. Some benefits of going through a U of M program include having fellow students from Michigan alongside you, and a much easier process to ensure that your study abroad credits will count toward your UM degree.

  3. If you don’t see the destination you always dreamed of going to on Mcompass, don’t worry! There are many organizations that offer countless destinations to study in, like CIS, ISA, and IES just to name a few. The benefits of studying through a third-party provider are a wider array of destination and length options, and sometimes at a lower cost than Michigan programs.

  4. Choosing a program can be tricky because there are so many options, so make an appointment with the  International Center for some more info on non-Michigan programs or the Peace Corps. You could also explore short term services learning trips through the Ginsberg Center.
