Moving Out? Here's How to Clean Up!

Moving can be such a pain. It’s often hard to believe how much trash we can accumulate in just one year. When you’re in a rush to get out of Ann Arbor dealing with all of your stuff can be a challenge. Here are some tips and rules to be aware of so that you can plan ahead.

  1. According to Ann Arbor City Ordinance, all trash and recycling must fit in your city-issued trash and recycling bins. If you fail to follow this rule when including things like desks, couches or TVs, you are subject to a minimum $100 fee. Please check to see which materials are and are not accepted.
  2. For large items, such as couches, you may have to schedule a time for pick up and it can vary in price. Feel free to check out some of these services:
    1. 1-800-GOT-JUNK
    2. Big Time Services: 734-330-9000
    3. Calverty’s Roll-Off Containers, Inc.: 734-426-2280 (they also have a drop off option)
    4. Honeymoon Hauling: 734-761-4030
  3. You can also donate your unwanted furniture, household goods, appliances, clothes, etc. to some of the organizations below.
    1. Kiwanis Club of Ann Arbor: 734-665-0450 [see attached letter]
    2. Recycle Ann Arbor ReUse Center: 734-222-7880
    3. Salvation Army: 734-332-3474
    4. PTO Thrift Shop: 734-996-9195
  4. If you’re looking to keep all your items and just don’t know where to store it for the summer, consider Inn Storage, Maple Village Self Storage, or Climate Control Indoor Storage.

If you are leaving your residence just for the summer, make sure to unplug your appliances, turn off lights, clean out your refrigerators, and lock up windows and doors. It’s also recommended to have a friend or neighbor that you know keep an eye on your residence and keep you updated if there’s anything out of the ordinary. Be sure to let your landlord know that you'll be gone all summer too!
