Home safety and security over the holidays

As the Fall semester of 2020 comes to an end, many students will be leaving Ann Arbor to go home for the holidays. While most people are focused on finals, staying safe during COVID, and getting ready to leave town, it’s also important to make sure you leave your home safe and secure.

As you leave your home for the Winter break, make sure you have reviewed and completed the following steps:

  1. Unplug appliances and electronics: This helps to prevent an electrical short and potential fire, and also to avoid unnecessary additions to your electrical bill.

  2. Check your thermostat to make sure it is at an appropriate temperature that won’t raise your electricity bill, while also being warm enough so that your pipes don’t freeze-- especially during the cold Michigan winters. The recommended temperature is 60 degrees.

  3. Make sure your valuables are in a safe place out of sight, or take them home with you. The chance of your home being broken into increases when your valuables are visible and easy to access.

  4. Lock all doors and windows. Make sure that your windows are closed not only to decrease the likelihood of a break-in, but also to prevent any rain, snow, or animals coming into your home while you’re gone. Putting weather strips or even towels at the bottom of your door will prevent any incoming weather or drafts.

  5. Throw out any food that may go bad such as meat, poultry, fish, dairy products, and all cooked leftovers. Be sure to check expiration dates on other foods.

  6. Take out all of your trash and recycling to avoid the build-up of foul smells.

  7. Ensure that you have packed all necessary school supplies and textbooks that you may need over break - especially since many students will remain at home for Winter semester.

  8. Make sure you have necessary items for traveling such as a plane, train, or bus ticket; passport or ID, and always have a mask on hand!

Have a safe and fun break!
