Have fun - and Stay Safe

With sporting festivities and celebrations that coincide with college life, here is important safety information from Wolverine Wellness and University Health Service, designed to help you have fun while staying safe. Spring, St Patrick’s Day, March Madness and end of classes are just a few of the reasons that you may choose to celebrate in the coming weeks. Take a look at the suggestions below for how to enjoy these events safely.

Safety and alcohol use:

  1. If you plan to drink for games or celebrations, take a look at these strategies that can help you Stay in the Blue! :

    • Start activities later in the day

    • Eat before and while drinking, especially foods that are high in protein (wings, pizza, and bean dip, yum!)

    • Drink water

    • Pace yourself

    • Avoid shots

  2. If you do not plan to drink, don’t sweat it! There are thousands of UM students who choose not to drink.  And the majority of those who do, drink 4 or fewer in a sitting.

  3. Help create an inclusive space, depending on the other people that you are socializing with. Check whether everyone else is consuming alcohol (or not) and what their plans are. and know your audience! Many individuals choose not to drink for a variety of reasons, such as religious or cultural beliefs, being under 21, illness, family history, being in recovery, and more.

COVID-19:

  1. While considering COVID-19 prevention, alcohol can lower inhibitions and impair decision-making. Also note that drinking alcohol can weaken your immune system, making it harder for your body to fight off illness.
