Festive Fall Fun

As University of Michigan students enter the fall season, many may find themselves missing the warm long days of the summer. The academic workload gets heavier, and days feel more packed. But that is no reason to dampen our spirits. The fall comes with a new energy on campus that can be just as exciting as the summer. Here is a fun list of festive fall activities that will be sure to get you in the mood to watch the leaves change!

Visit a cider mill! Coming from California, I had no idea why people choose to go to cider mills. After visiting my first one, the answer became clear. Choosing pumpkins, eating donuts, and drinking cider made me feel like a kid again. It also got me in the mood to appreciate the chilly weather.

Carve pumpkins! Pumpkin carving is not just a children’s activity. Make an evening out of it by getting your friends and roommates together. See who can make the funniest face.

Bake some sweets! Pumpkin spice lattes are nice, but they should not be the only festive fall treat. Pick out a good fall recipe, like a pumpkin pie or snickerdoodle cookies. Be sure not to hog all the sweets- Get your friends together to eat all your baked goods.

Plan your Halloween costumes! Fall also means my personal favorite holiday, Halloween, is right around the corner. Don’t go out unprepared. Make sure you have a good costume (or three) planned for the weekend. Be sure you are sensitive to cultural appropriation as you select your costumes.

The fall does not have to be boring just because school has started. Take advantage of all these activities and use your fall spirit as an excuse to get together with some friends! Above all else, be sure to get outside and appreciate the outdoors before it gets too cold. Once winter is here, we will be missing these cool fall evenings. So, put on a flannel and head outside to watch the leaves change. Stay festive, Wolverines!
